What is your bikini made of?

As we always say, this blog is created to bring you closer to the world of the bikini because, as you know, it is more than just a simple garment. Today we want to tell you something to take into account when buying a bikini: its fabric.

Since it was made by a French engineer in 1946, it was inspired by the Bikini Atoll (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the word Bikini comes from the Masrhalese (the Marshall Islands is where the atoll is located). Pik meaning ''surface'' and Ni which means ''coconut''. Leaving aside images from films where a split coconut acts as a top, the bikini has evolved so much over the decades, to the point that today, all types of bikinis converge. In the beginning there were two-piece high-waisted bikinis, in Brazil the beautiful Brazilian cut was invented, and today we find all the cuts so that every woman is free to choose what makes her feel more beautiful.

Material of which the bikinis are made.

You've probably often wondered what materials bikinis are made of, or heard that there are materials for sustainable purposes to improve bikini fashion with respect to climate change and sustainable development. We can find polyester fabrics made from recycled yarn and water-based inks as the most environmentally friendly combination that manufacturers are slowly developing. Most bikinis are made of lycra, or elastane, a synthetic fibre noted for its great strength and elasticity, also known as spandex. This elasticity is produced by the composition of this type of fabric, a 95% of polyurethane and a 5% of other materials. These polymers form long chains linked together, giving the appearance of a spring, which encourages it to expand to either side avoiding the deformation of the garment after use, this gives that feeling of comfort avoiding pressure on the bust.

But it is not the only material of the bikini, to avoid transparency, especially in lighter bikinis, is the bikini lining, usually made of a specific breathable material for it, although it can also be another layer of lycra that acts mainly as a reinforcement and adapts to the bikini piece.

Characteristics of a good bikini fabric.

The fabric of which your bikini is made must have certain characteristic features in order to meet the minimum essential performance requirements:

  • Elasticity: must offer enough elasticity to mould to our body perfectly and naturally. It is one of the basic characteristics of lycra, as we have told you before, it can expand in all four directions allowing a fantastic fit.
  • Anti-deformation: Due to the characteristics of the material itself, the garments are prevented from becoming deformed after wearing them, so we can repeat model season after season.
  • Resistance: Lycra prevents bikinis from deteriorating when exposed to sea salt or chlorine in swimming pools.
  • Lightness: since we use it mainly for bathing (the sunbathing does not affect what we want to tell you) must be made with light fabrics, since all fabrics weigh more when wet, as well as offering optimum breathability for good drying.
  • Lined: necessary only when the garment is of light colours to avoid transparencies that could make us uncomfortable, obviously this decision goes to the taste of each one, there are girls with more tolerance to transparency and others less.
